Contoy Island is located in the northeast coast of the state of Quintana Roo and is the oldest ecologic protected area in the Yucatan Peninsula. In 1961, the government declared it as a Natural Reserve Zone and a Wildlife Refuge. The island became by official classification a National Park in 1998. This ecologic reserve is non-populated and cared for by the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas. Marine birds are numerous here. Some are migrating, some are residents, and occasionally marine bird species have been recorded. The biodiversity of Contoy Island makes it a paradise for nature lovers.
